When Volkswagen was developing its own car radio system, I joined the development team to to support the development of the AM/FM part of the car radio. An essential part of my development work was, among other things, the integration of the RDS (Radio Data System), which allows the transmission of additional digital information (e.g. artist and title of a currently played song) in analog broadcasting. Through the transmission of alternative frequencies by means of RDS, it is possible to follow a program once it has been set without further manual intervention by the user if the vehicle leaves the transmission range of one station and enters the transmission range of another station.
In cooperation with the on-site residents of the suppliers of the tuner hardware I developed the interfaces to control the tuner hardware for functions such as setting the receive frequency and to receive data from the tuner hardware like i.e. station lists. In coordination with the team for the development of control elements of the touchscreen I developed the interfaces for receiving user input.
Other areas of my involvement in this project included prototype testing and tests and trouleshooting of the connection of control elements such as the MFL (‘Multifunktionslenkrad’, German for ‘multifunction steering wheel’) over CAN.
